Yesterday, Salon premiered Mike’s new music video for “Wait! You’ll Find a Better Way” along with an in-depth look at the making of the video.
Directed by Max Skaff, the black and white video offers a sympathetic alternative to the similarly titled slogan from Paul Ryan. When it came time to make the video, Mike turned to Max Skaff, who had previously worked with him on the video for “I Can’t Believe I Found You in That Town,” with only two instructions: keep the ending ambiguous, and take a documentary-type approach to detailing a first date.
Soon after that, Speaker Paul Ryan launched a political website called “A Better Way.” Upon seeing the latter site, Doughty felt compelled to reclaim the titular phrase. “The song is about being mired in anxiety and seeking a way out,” he said. “Then somebody showed me the Ryan thing, and I thought, I really, really need not to be associated with that. The endemic transphobia of the Republicans being a big part of my anger.”
